The 410th batch of announcements from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology arrived as expected, releasing a dense wave of new vehicle information. Among them, the first model under Beijing Off-Road's all-new "Xingtan" brand, the Xingtan 5X, became the focus of the most attention.

Based on the application images alone, this vehicle has already gotten many people excited. Its body silhouette is boxy and rugged, paired with a through-type light bar, a side-opening tailgate, and an externally mounted spare tire, giving it the imposing presence of a large electric box, and it was quickly dubbed the "Beijing Defender" by the industry. As the parameters were revealed, its hardcore strength could no longer be hidden. The Xingtan 5X is not only similar in form to the Defender, but in core dimensions such as size, range, and intelligence, it almost comprehensively outclasses popular competitors in the same class, making it a formidable rival that neither the Great Wall H10 nor the Tai 7 can avoid.

Class-leading size, longest range, and fully loaded intelligent driving make the Xingtan 5X a leader in its segment

In terms of exterior design, the Xingtan 5X pays tribute to Beijing Off-Road's classic rugged style while injecting the technological language of the new energy era. The closed front fascia is paired with a through-type light bar, and together with the straight, tough body lines, it not only retains the wild genes of a boxy SUV but also strengthens its recognizability as an electrified model. In terms of body dimensions, the Xingtan 5X can be described as tall and imposing. Including the externally mounted spare tire, its length reaches 5005mm, its height reaches 1910mm, and its wheelbase is 2875mm. A width-to-height ratio close to 1:1 creates an extremely strong presence. This height is quite competitive within the B-segment mid-to-large boxy SUV camp, and visually it is even more imposing than the Tai 7. The larger body will also translate into more spacious cabin room, and it is speculated that the driving and riding experience will be among the most spacious and comfortable in its class. At the same time, the application information shows that the new vehicle will offer R21-inch wheels, which is also the largest size in its class, further enhancing the visual impact of the side profile.

The announcement shows that the Xingtan 5X will offer two new energy powertrain forms: pure electric and hybrid. Among them, the hybrid version is equipped with a 50.4kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack, with a WLTC pure electric range of 232km, and under the CLTC standard it is expected to exceed 300km, far surpassing popular models such as the Tai 7, and is expected to become the longest-range contender in the hybrid boxy SUV market. The pure electric version's CLTC range of 625km is likewise in the top tier. For daily commuting, one charge a week is enough, and for light off-roading on the outskirts, there is no pressure at all.

In terms of intelligence, there are even more highlights. In the application images, it can be clearly seen that the interior is equipped with dual connected large screens, expected to be the same 15.6-inch dual connected screens as the Beijing Off-Road sales champion BJ40. The front part of the roof reserves mounting positions for a lidar and a three-hole camera. Combined with Beijing Off-Road's previous establishment of a joint off-road center with Huawei Yinwang and its move to equip flagship models such as the Taitan 700 with Huawei Qiankun intelligent driving system, it is highly likely that the Xingtan 5X will be equipped with Huawei ADS Pro advanced intelligent assisted driving. Huawei Qiankun intelligent driving has a well-established reputation for its performance in scenarios such as urban/highway NOA, and the off-road NOA jointly created with Beijing Off-Road further lowers the technical threshold for off-road driving. If implemented on the Xingtan 5X, this "Beijing Defender" will directly open up a generational gap with its peers in the intelligent dimension, making it even smarter than the Land Rover Defender itself.

From Taitan to Xingtan: Beijing Off-Road's dual-brand encirclement means the boxy SUV market is about to change

From the perspective of strategic layout, the Xingtan 5X is not only a major upgrade to Beijing Off-Road's product matrix, but also a precise surprise attack on the new energy boxy SUV market. Just last month, Beijing Off-Road launched the "Taitan" brand, with its first model, the Taitan 700, carrying the mission of establishing a new benchmark for luxury off-road vehicles. From the naming of "Xingtan," it can be seen that the character "tan" continues the gene of rugged off-roading in the same vein, while the character "xing" carries a sense of technological exploration and romantic life, indicating that the Xingtan 5X focuses on an electrified family vehicle that is "usable in the city and in the wild," driving Beijing Off-Road to achieve a comprehensive leap in electrification and intelligence in the mainstream rugged off-road market.

The Xingtan 5X targets the hottest and most fiercely competitive light off-road market today—users want both the rugged sentiment of a boxy SUV and the low usage cost of new energy, the ease and comfort of assisted driving, and the family practicality of a large space. With Beijing Off-Road's 68 years of deep technical accumulation, large boxy space, class-leading range, and intelligent assisted driving, the Xingtan 5X precisely cuts into this pain point. Coupled with the "Beijing Defender" label that comes with its own traffic and topic appeal, the Xingtan 5X is fully capable of becoming a rule-changer in the new energy boxy SUV market.

After the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology information was disclosed, industry insiders have been speculating about the final pricing of the "Xingtan." Many analyses believe that if priced in the 200,000 yuan range, the Xingtan 5X would almost be coming to flip the table. By then, the excitement of this boxy SUV battle can be imagined. Let us wait and see!
