The Mercedes-Benz VLE, a new luxury large MPV built by the brand on the VAN.EA platform, had previously only announced an 800V pure electric version. This model is equipped with a 115kWh battery pack, has a WLTP range exceeding 700 kilometers, and supports 15-minute fast charging to add 320 kilometers of range. According to the latest industry spy reports and disclosures by overseas media, the VLE will add a DHT hybrid version, expected to be officially released in the first half of 2027. This move aims to make up for the shortcomings of the pure electric model in long-distance charging and low-temperature environments, thereby further improving the product matrix of this flagship multi-purpose luxury vehicle.

This DHT hybrid system is jointly driven by a 1.5T turbocharged engine and an electric motor built into the transmission, with a combined maximum power of 140 kilowatts (about 190 horsepower), and higher-trim models are also equipped with the 4MATIC all-wheel drive system. Unlike Mercedes-Benz's existing 48V mild hybrid technology, this hybrid system has an independent electric drive circuit. The engine can directly drive the wheels in its efficient range, while the electric motor is responsible for starting, low-speed driving, and power assistance. The system does not need to rely on charging piles. In urban short trips, it mainly uses electricity, while on long journeys it mainly uses fuel, effectively avoiding the charging anxiety of pure electric MPVs on long-distance travel. The VLE hybrid version continues the body framework of the pure electric model, supports a flexible seating layout for 5 to 8 seats, and retains configurations such as dual-side electric sliding doors, movable rear seats, the MB.OS intelligent cockpit, and air suspension.

Mercedes-Benz's addition of a DHT version for the VLE is mainly driven by global market demand for differentiated powertrain solutions. The pure electric VLE is positioned for urban business reception and short-distance travel, relying on 800V high-voltage fast charging technology and suited to metropolitan areas with well-developed charging facilities; however, in remote areas of Europe or long-distance business scenarios in China, high-end customers still have concerns about the range degradation and charging queues of large pure electric MPVs. Thanks to the hybrid retrofit interface reserved by the VAN.EA platform, there is no need for a major reconstruction of the body structure, which effectively controls the research and development costs of the added powertrain version.

This DHT hybrid version of the VLE will not replace the pure electric model. The two will be sold in parallel and clearly differentiated in positioning. The pure electric version focuses on high-end business users who value a quiet experience and zero emissions, while the hybrid version targets users who frequently commute between cities and have limited charging conditions. In China's luxury MPV market, models such as the Denza D9 and Li MEGA have long established a dual-line layout with parallel hybrid and pure electric offerings. Mercedes-Benz's addition of a DHT version to the VLE this time is precisely a key step to benchmark against competitors and complete its powertrain choices.

Of course, the DHT hybrid version of the VLE is not without shortcomings. The addition of the hybrid system inevitably increases the vehicle's weight and also compresses chassis space, making it slightly inferior to the pure electric version in rear-seat quietness and chassis refinement. But for Mercedes-Benz, the VLE carries the brand's key mission of opening a new track in large luxury electric MPVs. The introduction of the DHT version not only broadens the target user group but also effectively lowers the purchase threshold. Against the backdrop of an uneven pace of electrification in the global luxury MPV segment, the dual-powertrain strategy of parallel pure electric and DHT hybrid offerings is precisely a pragmatic and compromise choice made by Mercedes-Benz between technological foresight and market reality.
